On my living room wall hangs a portrait of my father with his Model A roadster and beside him is a portrait of my four year old son with his toy Jeep.  Both of these people are gone now.  My father was taken by cancer and my little boy has grown into a fine young man.  The memories preserved by these portraits will live with me forever.

My journey through life so far has taught me the importance of family, friends and appreciation for every day that we are given.  I hope that the memories I preserve for families today will be cherished for generations.

The past twenty years that I've worked as a professional photographer have been some of the best years of my life. Creating portraits that will become family heirlooms is something I hope to continue to do for many years to come. But I've always felt there was something more in store for me.

When I was about four years old, my older sister joked that some day I would be an artist. I had to ask my mother what an "artist" was. I don't remember her answer, but I somehow felt that being an artist was my destiny. While I've long considered myself a "photographic" artist, the time has finally come for me to take my art to the next level.

Professional photographers take pride in their work.  They strive to produce the finest images possible.  To mark their progress, photographers enter competitions and compare their work with that of their peers.  Achievements are marked by the awards received from professional photography organizations.
I have won numerous awards including Fuji Masterpiece, Kodak Gallery, International Photographer of the Year, Electronic Imager of the Year, Michigan Top Seven, many Best of Show awards as well as winning several fine art and folio competitions.  I have also qualified to receive the Craftsman Degree from Professional Photographers of America.  (See below.)  Additionally, I currently serve as President Elect of Professional Photographers of Michigan.

I am a Certified Professional Photographer, a designation granted by the Professional Photographic Certification Commission. (See below.)  To earn Certification, I have passed a comprehensive written examination measuring technical expertise, and have successfully submitted portrait work to a panel of judges.

In addition, I also hold specialty endorsements in the areas of portrait, wedding, children and high school senior photography. An achievement that is unsurpassed in Northern Michigan.

PPA Degree Program

PPA degrees help prove the effort that photographers put into their art.  Photography is not a static industry; new techniques and technologies always appear.  The actions photographers take to earn degrees help keep them abreast of the changes.  If a photographer has reached this status point in the photographic industry - the receipt of a PPA degree - he or she has pushed beyond the norm.  Is this not the type of person you want to entrust your memories to?

Offered to Professional Photographers of America members since 1937, PPA degrees continue as a prestigious sign of advanced education in the industry - a symbol of knowledge and achievement.  Karen Walker has recently qualified for the Photographic Craftsman Degree and will be receiving her degree at Imaging USA on January 17, 2012.  Additionally, Karen is working toward her Master Photographer and Master of Electronic Imaging Degrees and is very near completion of the requirements for these prestigious designations.

Certification Makes A Difference

When you hire a photographer, you want the best.  Unfortunately, anyone can claim to be a professional photographer.  When you want a true professional, just look for a Certified Professional Photographer.  What does "Certified Professional Photographer" mean?  Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) is a designation granted by the Professional Photographic Certification Commission, the world's leading certification agency for imaging professional.

The Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) Certification program is recognized throughout the industry as a mark of excellence.  Similar to the CPA designation for accountants or Board Certification for physicians and lawyers, the CPP designation assures you of a photographer's level of expertise as well as their dedication to continually develop new skills and techniques.  Those who have earned the CPP designation must pass a comprehensive written exam measuring their technical expertise and successfully submit their work to a panel of judges for review and approval.  To maintain the CPP designation, a photographer must renew their credentials every five years.  Karen Walker earned her CPP designation in 2004 and is now helping other photographers with the process by serving as an official liaison to the Professional Photographic Certification Commission.
